Eligibility screening for a voluntary study on "First Responders and Suicide: Retrospectives of Families and Loved Ones"

*Please contact me directly by email or phone after completing the survey to schedule an interview. If shown a link to Calendly, please screenshot the webpage showing the link and send it to me. The link will not work and you must contact me to schedule the interview* This research study is about understanding how family members and loved ones of first responders (Law Enforcement Officer, Fire Fighter, EMT/Paramedic) look back on and interpret changes in behavior that occurred before a first responder’s suicide or suicide attempt. You can choose to participate if you are at least 18 years old and are a family member or loved one of a first responder who died by suicide or survived a suicide attempt. You must be able to speak about your experiences in English and provide informed consent. Reasons why you might want to participate in this study include having an opportunity to share your experiences and helping researchers better understand behavioral changes that families may notice before a first responder’s suicide or suicide attempt. You might not want to participate if talking about suicide, a suicide attempt, your family members or loved one, or events leading up to the incident would be too upsetting or uncomfortable. Your decision about whether to participate is entirely up to you. If you decide not to be in the study, there won’t be any punishment or penalty. Whatever your choice, there will be no impact on any benefits or services that you would normally receive. If you choose to begin the study, you can change your mind and quit at any time without any consequences. If you decide to participate in this research study, I will ask you to: (1) answer a few questions to confirm that you are eligible to participate; (2) take part in one individual, semi-structured interview about your observations and experiences before your family member or loved one’s suicide or suicide attempt; and (3) answer follow-up questions during the interview when needed. Before the interview begins, I will ask you to identify a pseudonym, and only that pseudonym will be used during the interview. The pseudonym will be used as an identifier for your interview data and study records in place of your name whenever possible. The interview should take about 30-90 minutes. With your permission, the interview will be recorded so it can be accurately transcribed and analyzed. You probably will not experience any direct personal benefit from participating. Some questions will involve sensitive or uncomfortable topics, including suicide, suicide attempts, behavioral changes, and experiences. You may feel sad, distressed, or uncomfortable. You may skip any question, take a break, or stop the interview at any time. You will not be paid for completing this study. There are no alternative options to this research project. The research team is committed to protecting your rights and privacy as a research subject. We may publish or present the results, but your name will not be used. Interview recordings, transcripts, and study records will be stored securely and accessed only by the research team. Identifying information will be removed or replaced with a study code when possible. While absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, the research team will make every effort to protect the confidentiality of your records to the extent permitted by law. If you have questions about the study, you can contact me at [email protected] or by call or text at 817-670-1956. For questions about your rights or to report complaints, contact the UTA Research Office at 817-272-3723 or [email protected]. If you meet the eligibility requirements to participate in this study, you will be provided my contact information to schedule a time for the interview at the end of the survey. You are indicating your voluntary agreement to participate by clicking accept. *Please contact me directly by email or phone after completing the survey to schedule an interview.
